This website presents the findings from a three year study of users of mobile, Sustained Micropulse TENS (SMT) therapy. The site is presently far from complete, with plans for a blog / opinion section in the coming months.

A survey was conducted in six parts via a mailout over the period from January 2003 to July 2006. Users of mobile SMT therapy were requested to answer 18 questions, in which they recorded their responses in how they had self-managed their pain caused by arthritis and musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). 93 percent had been suffering chronic pain more than 3 months prior to applying SMT.

The ‘SMT Users Study’ was conducted by surveys mailed to 10,334 people who had purchased a low cost EziStim® mobile SMT device from Bio Electronics Pty Ltd. 2,154 responses were received, with at least an additional 938 users stating they shared the use of their EziStim® device with at least one other person in their household, representing a total of 3,090 users.

A second and third study was conducted from data received in supplementary survey parts E and F, which comprised 1950 mailings, with 715 responses received.

  • The second study identified patient reactions to their use of Cox-2 inhibitor and NSAID anti-inflammatory pain medications.
  • The third study was to identified the regions of body where the musculoskeletal disorders that were treated.

SMT Users Survey Data

  • Data was received unidentifiable from respondents, who were advised not to provide names and addresses.
  • Data received was compiled into respondent unidentifiable databases
  • Data received was analyzed and graphically illustrated
  • Data received was gathered as user feedback to:
  1. Document the evidence-based efficacy of SMT therapy
  2. Minimise the burden of providing effective healthcare, whilst obtaining substantial monetary savings
  3. Improve the design and mobility of SMT devices
  4. Make SMT devices easier to use for drug free pain management, hastening healing and to rehabilitate injury

Study Data

In each of the six parts, the survey responses varied by less than 5 percent. The data from the six parts of the study were combined; with additional data from a Cox-2 inhibitors and NSAIDS Study, plus data on Pain Regions treated gained from responses from parts E and F of supplementary data.

Survey Results

Survey data was inserted in a database with all responses counted and made into the tables and graphs shown on this site. An analysis was made on each question and data in relationship between the question/s to reach final analysis.

SMT is a Proven Technology

SMT is a mobile version of the proven technology of Electrical Stimulation Therapy in the form of Transcutaneous (across the skin) Electrical Nerve Stimulation – TENS.

No longer trapped within the confines of the pain clinics, labor wards and physiotherapy rooms, SMT provides mobile sustained treatments on-demand, as and when required. SMT uses similar microelectronic technology to implants like the heart pacemaker and bionic ear.
